Colapesce is an old Sicilian legend about a young man, Nicola (Cola), who loved the sea so much that he spent most of his life swimming and became almost half-fish (fish is pesce in italian). Fascinated by his extraordinary abilities, the King challenged him by throwing precious objects into the sea and asking Colapesce to dive down and retrieve them. According to the legend, he discovered that Sicily was supported by three underwater columns, one of which was badly damaged. To prevent the island from collapsing, Colapesce chose to remain beneath the sea forever, holding Sicily up with his own body. This artwork celebrates the quiet strength of those who carry more than anyone sees and the magic of staying connected to the place we call home.
